Snap Server Recovery Instructions

The Recovery page allows you to "Repair" or "Reinstall" the server's Operating System. You should only need to Repair or Reinstall if the OS has become damaged.

Obtaining the OS Image File

First you will need to locate an OS Image file. This file should be found on the resource CD that came with your server. It is called "GuardianOSImage". If you have upgraded your server's OS since you purchased it, then use the upgrade image file. If you have misplaced the OS Image file, you can download it from Snap Appliance's Technical Support web site.

Fetching the OS Image File onto your Snap Server

You can specify any path accessible to your local machine. Click on the "Browse" button, and browse to a local file or enter a Local or UNC path. For Example:

  c:\Downloads\GuardianOSImage
  \\yourserver\path\GuardianOSImage
Alternately you may fetch the OS Image file via HTTP, FTP, NFS or RSYNC. This may require the location of a HTTP or FTP proxy server if you have one. To fetch the archive via HTTP, FTP, NFS or RSYNC, use the following URL syntax:
  http://yourserver/path/GuardianOSImage
  ftp://yourserver/path/GuardianOSImage
  nfs://yourserver/path/GuardianOSImage
  rsync://yourserver/path/GuardianOSImage

Repair

Choose the "Repair" option if you wish to attempt to repair the OS, and hope to revive access to your own data on the hard drives. If successful, all of your system settings and data will be left intact.

Reinstall

Choose the "Reinstall" option if the "Repair" option did not succeed. This will completely reinstall your operating system, and destroy all of your system settings. However, if you have previously created a "Recovery Image" file, then you may be able to restore previous settings and may even be able to revive access to your data. Use "Disaster Recovery" in the main adminstration pages after a successful reinstall.

Upgrade

Choose the "Upgrade" option to load a newer version of the OS onto your Snap Server. This option is equivalent to an upgrade from the main web pages. Upgrade attempts to preserve system settings and data.

Fresh Install

Choose the "Fresh Install" option to reinstall the server's OS, destroying almost all server settings and all data. Unlike a Reinstall, a Fresh Install will destroy all data RAIDs. Only your server's Name and IP Address should remain intact.

Once you select an option and press "OK" your server will begin fetching the OS Image file. This operation can take a couple of minutes. There may be no obvious activity while the fetch of this large file occurs. Please be patient. Once the OS Image file has been fetched onto your server, the chosen operation will begin and you should see progress messages as it is occurring. The whole operation can take ten minutes or more, so please be patient. It is very important that you do not shut off power while the operation is being performed. If you have not seen any notice of success or failure after a full fifteen minutes, you should begin the process again or contact Tech. Support.
